Asian Food

March 29th, 2009

Spending a few months in university residence made it so easy to make friends. In fact, my roommate and I spent a lot of time with Asian people and most of it was spent eating meals together in a cafeteria. After one of my particular friends had spent a few weeks in Canada and the excitement of living in a new and strange country had finally worn off, she mentioned that she missed her food from back home in Hong Kong. She wasn't even satisfied with what we Westerners would call a Chinese buffet! Now that we've moved on from residence and are cooking for ourselves again, I remembered what my friend said while thinking about attempting to spend my third co-op in Japan and decided to take the plunge of cooking Asian food until it becomes natural without running back to my familiar Western as soon as I get tired of it. In this attempt, I spent my Saturday shopping with my Chinese friend from work and then cooking a meal for a dinner party with another Chinese friend later in the day.

Stirfry

March 29th, 2009 (updated August 9th, 2009)

Stirfry is an easy and healthy way to eat. It can also be cheap if you shop at an Asian supermarket. Start by oiling a pan with just enough to keep things from sticking. Cut up the following ingredients and mix them, starting with those that take the most time to cook tenderly. When serving, rice can be optionally be used as a base to make things even cheaper.
